Smiling at the Gas Pump

I found myself at a gas station recently, watching the digital numbers on the pump trill and escalate.
It is always a bit of a mystery as to exactly how much a "full tank" will be, and those little digits can really hold your attention. There have been times where I had to force myself to look away, choosing not to watch as my cash foundation eroded by the gallon.
When I heard the "clunk" sound, the pump letting me know it was time to come back to the here and now, I saw a new set of digits on it's screen. I had spent $70 to fill up my tank.
I had filled up just a few days earlier. In fact, I had just pulled $100 cash out of the bank just that day, knowing it would be a while before I had to use a card for anything. And here I was the same day, reduced to just enough cash in my pocket to have a nice meal at a good restaurant as long as I ate alone and didn't tip or pay tax.
How many times have you heard somebody say "look how expensive gas is getting"?
I looked back at the readout, staring right at the $70.
Blasted with a new number as to "just how expensive" it was, it hit me.
A big smile spread across my face.
I was hit with a wave of gratitude. I had just bought something that was very important to me.
I knew, looking at that little readout, that I had just bought 400 miles, with cash I had in my pocket. Was it a stretch to pay $70 for it?
You bet. But on this day, I had the money.
Those miles would take me to see my love. They would take me to see my friends. Those 400 miles were mine, and I could afford them.
Can you afford to fill up your tank?
If so, you have the power to go where you want to go.
Why not enjoy the hell out of it?
